Passing Bell

what is this?

A bell tower that exists only by being handed on. There is no server and no account: everything it is — every bell, every inscription, every date — travels inside the link or inside this very file.

Each hand casts one bell. The tower rings changes: permutations that need many bells. On one bell the tower is trivially finishable; every bell after that multiplies the number of possible changes, so each new hand pushes the end further away. It can grow, but it can never again be finished.

A ring holds twelve bells. When a thirteenth is cast, the oldest is melted into the bourdon — the deep bell you may hear toll before the ringing starts. Its bronze remains; its words do not.

Nothing about you travels except what you type into the engraving, the moment you cast, and the count of changes rung while you held it — and you are shown all of it before you commit.

Cast your bell

Bells carry words around the shoulder. Engrave up to 40 characters, or none — the metal doesn't mind. This is the only thing about you that will ever travel.

Two towers meet

Whichever you do not keep will be forgotten by this browser — though any copy of it elsewhere lives on. The tower cannot see forks, and it cannot know a copy died.
